A long process, so file quickly if you expect to be unemployed for long
Unemployment is issued by your state, and so each state rules will be different (find your unemployment office). For me, I knew I wouldn’t be employed for long and it turned out to be more difficult than it was worth. But, what surprised me is that it didn’t dawn on me - I was so busy planning my comeback, it took 3 weeks for someone to say, “you need to apply for unemployment before your severance runs out.” Give it a go, but remember that it’s not a quick process, so do it early - a great thing to do during the moping stage.
